On the 2nd of December we had a coffee-morning at English for Fun. We organized it to raise money for poor kids in Sri Lanka, who are still suffering the affects of the Tsunami. It was a lot of work for us. Our group decided to produce a magazine to help these children. It took us several months to finish it.

On the day of the coffee-morning many guests arrived and we made them feel at home. English was spoken all morning. Students, parents, grandmas and kids all had a great time talking to each other and eating our cakes! One of Carol’s friends bought cakes for 25€. Another friend donated 40€ without buying anything! All this money goes to Sri Lanka. We raised over 200 €. Now we want to give the money to support the building of a well in a village called “Rodiya-Village” in Sri Lanka.

The village is about 15 km away from the city Naramala. At the moment 82 families are living there. A total amount of 620 people of each age are living there. It has a little shop, a kindergarden, an old primary-school and a well. But they don’t have proper streets, electricity, water or sanitation. The well is old, dirty and dry in summer. Then the people have to walk 11 km to the next well. In the rainy season it rains through the holes in the roofs and the people have to sleep on the dirty and damp clay floor.

If you want to help these people to get a better live, you can send some money or sponsor a child for 25€ per month. With this money a child in Sri Lanka can go to school, can get clothes and can get more food.

Carol has decided to sponsor a very hard working English teacher through English for Fun. This woman is a volunteer. Her name is Udayakumari Abeysinghe. We look forward to hearing from her about her work.
